MAKING GROTESK COMIC BOOKS
Jonathan Kociuba is an artist based in Toronto, known for his work on comic books The Colony, The Flytrap (1-3), Loverman, and Deathblazers. His art has been prominently featured in the movie Relax I’m From The Future starring Rhys Darby. Kociuba also frequently creates album covers and gig posters for bands. With a wealth of comic book knowledge, he continues to leave his mark on the industry through his unique style, co-founding the comic book company Grotesk Comics in 2021 with writer Eddie Mumford.
Eddie Mumford is a fiction writer based in Toronto, known for his collaborative zine Frack Mountain Presents, the novel Invisible Foxes, and the award-winning essay Tongue and Cheek; The Humour and Horror of Cannibalism. He lives with his partner and their dog. With an appetite for storytelling, Mumford continues to make an impact in the literary world. In 2021, he co-founded the comic book company Grotesk Comics with artist Jonathan Kociuba, writing and publishing The Flytrap (1-3), The Colony, and their upcoming book HEAVY PETAL.
At Grotesk Comics, we create immersive and thought-provoking narratives. What began as sketches from Jonathan's dreams evolved into a gripping sci-fi horror saga, with 'The Colony' marking its latest instalment. Drawing from personal experiences and fears, we explored themes of sacrifice, survival, and the grotesque, inviting readers to confront the darkest corners of existence through our storytelling.​
Now we are working on our newest creation ‘HEAVY PETAL’ , a new book/series/character designed to be hacked and rewritten each time. We are having the time of our lives building this new world, and we can’t wait to share it!

Before THE COLONY, Grotesk Comics' inaugural series was THE FLYTRAP. This captivating series laid the groundwork for our storytelling prowess and set the stage for the dark and immersive world of THE COLONY. As our debut release in the comic world, THE FLYTRAP introduced readers to our unique blend of artistry and narrative, paving the way for the chilling tales yet to come.

There’s something wrong with Dr. Wright… In the heart of a desolate swamp, a hidden cult known as The Colony harbours dark secrets amidst the chaos of a world devastated by plague and disaster. Dr. Wright, guided by strange mushrooms, embeds herself within their ranks as a healer. But as she secretly harvests the mushrooms that fuel her visions, a sinister agenda begins to unfold, leading her down a treacherous path of manipulation and sacrifice.

Petal is a legend rewritten in real time. A mercenary, a queen, a traitor, a prisoner, depending on who's telling the story. Her past has been deleted. Her name misused. Her body replicated into androids she didn’t authorize.
She doesn’t want to save the world. She wants to stay free to take it or leave it. But in a world built on roles, rituals, and reputations, neutrality might be deadly if not impossible.
